Supposedly carved by glaciers the region is made up of four wide and gentle sloping valleys covered in fields of buckwheat, rice and potato. The region is also well known for the yathra weave with geometric designs, handspun and handwoven from sheep wool.
Bumthang is also known for honey production, gouda cheese and unfiltered red panda beer.
From Thimphu it is an eight-hour drive over several mountain passes and crossing two other districts. Domestic flights from Paro take 30 minutes.
