Why Bhutan
Straddling the southern slopes of the Eastern Himalayas, Bhutan or ‘DrukYul’, as Bhutanese call their home, is not your usual tourist destination.
This remote kingdom that literally did not exist for the rest of the world until the middle of the 20th century is an ancient land of myth and legend where happiness is a serious business and a national goal.
Festival Tours
One way of experiencing Bhutan’s rich culture is through the religious festivals or Tsechus that are held across the country on different dates.
These colourful annual events where sacred mask dances are performed in the cobbled stoned courtyard of ancient fortresses, to the accompaniment of religious music, pay homage to the country’s deep-rooted religious traditions and its patron saint, Guru Padmasambhava.
A living ancient culture
If there is something to see and experience in Bhutan, it is an ancient culture and tradition, that continues to thrive even today as part of everyday life.
In Bhutan, religion and culture are strands of the same thread. Himalayan Buddhist beliefs and practices have deeply influenced Bhutan’s culture and traditions that find expression in almost every sphere of life in this mountain kingdom.
Trekking
Trekking in Bhutan is challenging so physical fitness is a must. Some trekking routes go over mountain passes which are more than 4,000 metres high and the terrain can get extremely rugged. Acclimatisation to the altitude is essential.
Routes are graded from easy, moderate to strenuous depending on the altitude, daily walking hours and length. Easy routes generally involve walking three to four hours a day at a steady altitude.
