Cycling

Bhutan’s rugged landscape is suitable for both on road and off-road mountain biking, a sport that has grown in popularity in recent years with both locals and visitors.

From dirt trails off the beaten path to pitched roads with challenging climbs and drops and gentle slopes, there are a variety of routes to suit all levels of mountain bikers. All biking tours are accompanied by a supporting van and a seasoned guide.

Riders should have an adequate level of fitness and stamina and experience for the more challenging tours.

Kayaking and Rafting

Bhutan has six major rivers, fed by glacial melt of the eastern Himalayas, that have been scouted and graded for rafting and kayaking.

The currents vary between slow and gentle for the uninitiated to powerful and raging torrents for the veterans. The best time for rafting and kayaking is from March to April and November to December.

The Phochhu river in Punakha valley is the most popular for rafting in Bhutan with about 15 rapids of class II and IV in its 16 kms course. Rafting the Mochhu river, also in Punakha, is also popular with around 10 rapids of 2 -2+ along its 10 km course.

This tour covers 2 days of white water rafting in the Phochhu and Mochhu rivers in Punakha valley and an exploration of historical and religious sites in and around Punakha valley.

TOUR OUTLINE:

Day 1. Arrive Paro.  Visit Kyichu temple, Rinpung Dzong. Halt Paro.

Day 2. Drive to Thimphu (52 kms). Thimphu sightseeing. Halt Thimphu.

Day 3. Drive to Punakha (71 kms, 2 and half hours) via Dochula pass. Halt at Punakha.

Day 4. Rafting along Phochhu and visits to historical sites.

Day 5. Rafting along Mochhu with a day hike in the morning.

Day 6. Drive to Thimphu and sightseeing in Thimphu.

Day 7. Drive to Paro and hike to Taktshang monastery.
